Compensation

$75000 - $85000 / year

Position Summary

Reporting to the HSE Manager, the Health & Safety Specialist works to support the overall HSE management system in an effort to minimize safety risks and promote a proactive and positive safety culture. 

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Conducts regular inspections and audits  
  • Assists in determining corrective and preventative actions, and manages/tracks the completion of effective implementations thereafter 
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of the HSE Management System including written processes, policies and procedures 
  • Assists in the development and review of risk assessments, safe work practices and safety procedures 
  • Takes a lead with safety incident reporting and investigation to ensure completion of documentation, investigation and recommendation and implementation of effective corrective actions 
  • Delivers safety communications in the field and to applicable workers 
  • Helps prepare and present safety presentations, workshops and trainings  
  • Supports the HSE team, JHSC’s by providing guidance  
  • Assists in the development and implementation of safety plans including emergency response plans 
  • Ensures compliance with organizational, government health and safety, and environmental standards 
  • Assists with safety incident reporting and investigations 
  • Identifies opportunities to improve safety and environmental performance and makes recommendations based on findings 
  • Delivers key safety metrics and performance indicators to the organizations   
  • Coordinates and delivers safety training 
  • Writes and disseminates safety communications  
  • Audits and coordinates purchasing of safety supplies/PPE 
  • Tracking of data and metrics calculations 
  • Facilitates drug and alcohol testing and ensures compliance of internal policies 
  • Monitors local regulations and client requirements and standards along with company policies and standards to ensure compliance 
  • Submits WSIB claims and associated return to work documentation 
  • Assists and/or leads internal / external audits 
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Completion of post-secondary education in Health & Safety or relevant field, or equivalent relevant experience  
  • Accredited HSE Certification strongly preferred 
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years’ experience in a safety capacity/similar role 
  • Experience working in Railway/Construction Industry considered an asset 
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and associated regulations and standards, and applicable legislation 
  • Proficient in MS office 
  • Well-developed communication (oral, written and presentation) and interpersonal skills 
  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Flexibility for travel; visits various locations 
  • Flexibility in scheduling to meet operational demands  
  • Works both indoors and outdoors, exposure to all weather conditions 
  • Standing, sitting, walking, speaking  
  • Use of Computer/keyboard 
  • Working in a safety-sensitive culture
