Position Summary

The Senior Project Accountant serves as a strategic financial partner to project leadership, focusing on proactive margin protection, financial risk mitigation, and executive-level trend reporting. The role provides full oversight of core project tracking, including monitoring expenses such as time, material, labor, and other costs incurred against project revenue and profitability. The Senior Project Accountant ensures robust financial decision-making for current and future jobs by analyzing complex financial data, preparing profit and loss statements, and enforcing rigorous accounting control procedures.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Takes the primary lead on the financial ownership, evaluation, tracking, and management of project claims.
  • Owns sophisticated rolling cash flow models and revenue projections for complex, multi-year infrastructure initiatives.
  • Leads monthly financial reviews with Project Managers and Operations Directors to deliver variance analysis and actionable cost-mitigation advice.
  • Oversees the financial management of large-scale change orders and complex multi-tiered subcontractor compliance.
  • Analyzes executive-level project performance trends and delivers actionable risk-mitigation recommendations. Drives the annual budget process and rolling forecasts.
  • Assists Project Managers with progress invoices and reviews internal equipment billings allocated to projects.
  • Supports the Regional Controller in regional forecasting, corporate business planning, and providing high-level ad hoc financial analysis for executive management.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 7 to 10 years of progressive project accounting/cost engineering in heavy civil, rail, or large infrastructure construction.
  • Mandated expert-level Excel capabilities for complex financial modeling and advanced proficiency in JD Edwards.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting. CPA is considered an asset.
  • High-level mastery of percentage-of-completion accounting for construction contracts, alongside deep knowledge of advanced finance, budgeting, and cost control principles. 
  • Expert understanding of federal, provincial, and local financial regulations.
  • Elite ability to analyze dense financial data, project future performance, and exercise a high level of discretion, professionalism, and integrity. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
