Director, Field Operations

 

The Director of Field Operations is responsible for performing project management duties on a professional level and reports to the Project Director, or to another management approved supervisor.

 

The Director of Field Operations has the overall responsibility to ensure that construction projects are completed successfully, schedule is completed in accordance with the contract milestones and resources are maintained within the project budget. The Director of Field Operations manages and directs Construction Managers and Superintendents at multiple construction sites, and is responsible for all personnel of the assigned project or projects.

 

 

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

 

  • Build, manage, and communicate project schedules to the Project Director
  • Manage project timelines for each project from start to finish;
  • Support, monitor and document progress along the way in alignment with the Project Schedule;
  • Support future look ahead projections and implementation; ensuring adherence to the schedule by the field operations;
  • Evaluate project resource needs ensuring supply of materials and labor coincide with deadlines;
  • Monitors and supports safety culture and implements improvement measures were deemed necessary;
  • Leads investigations for any incidents along with the HSE Manager;
  • Communicates with Unions and Human Resources regarding required resource in alignment with the project schedule;
  • Works with the Human Resources and Union Representatives on disciplinary actions and grievances;
  • Ensure Supervisors are leading project teams, such as, but not limited to: Construction Managers, Superintendents & Foreman related to electrical, signal and civil scope of work;
  • Work with Environmental Health and Safety to maintain strict safety guidelines are followed at each site;
  • Monitor safety team performance and adherence to all applicable legislation and owner rules;
  • Monitor and support quality control teams to verify quality of all performed work, tracking and documentation;
  • Review and approve large invoices and submit to Accounts Payable for approval;
  • Verify with project team that backup documentation for invoices including receiving records and timesheets conform to company standards;
  • Communicate with Owner’s during progress meetings and other occasions as required.
  • Support to identify scope description for subcontractors;
  • Search and create relationships with new vendors that will improve pricing and efficiency;
  • Works in the field and is hands-on with managers;
  • Plan, Schedule and execute work plans;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of which have been an Installation / Construction Manager on complex/large projects, with preference in Rail Construction Industry;
  • University Degree in Engineering, Project Management or relevant/related post-secondary discipline;
  • Experience within Rail or Heavy Civil construction design build environments with a contracting organization is an asset;
  • Construction and planning Experience with civil, electrical or signal installations is required;
  • Experience in supporting construction activities, on-site experience required.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction technology, scheduling, and methods.
  • Strong leadership qualities;
  • Ability to effectively train, manage and lead junior staff;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Strong problem-solving skills;
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills;
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present data;
  • Proficiency utilizing common business and construction applications such as Microsoft Office products.

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

 

  • Primarily works indoors but may occasionally be outdoors on construction sites;
  • Frequently sits, stands, walks, reads, writes and uses a computer keyboard;
  • May occasionally be exposed to harsh weather conditions or loud noise;
  • Standing, sitting, speaking for relatively long periods of time.
