Job Summary

Works as a member of a crew to perform track construction tasks on the Ottawa LRT project.

 

Unionized position

Shift work required (All shifts)

Wage rates: $35.07- $39.58

Training provided

This position is in Ottawa Ontario.

 

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Removes and replaces track and track components (e. g. rails, bars, etc.).
  • Replaces or repairs and adjusts track switches. 
  • Cuts rails to specific lengths. 
  • Drills holes through rails for insertion of bolts, and tightens or loosens bolts at joints that hold ends or rails together. 
  • Raises rails to allow for tie removal and replacement.
  • Slides and aligns tie plates.
  • Corrects deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge.
  • Observes condition of tracks, track beds, and track right of way to detect and report problems or defects. 
  • Pouring elastomeric grout.
  • Installs and repairs street and railroad crossings.
  • Complies with all company and railroad safety rules, practices and regulations.

 

General/Other Responsibilities and Duties

  • Sorts track material for loading and unloading.
  • Cleans tracks and clears ice and snow from tracks and switch boxes.
  • Lubricates machines, changes oil, and fills hydraulic reservoirs to specified levels.
  • Grinds ends of new or worn rails to attain smooth joints.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • 2+ years in construction, track installation, maintenance and/ or repair.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions, both general and technical.
  • Problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Good verbal skills to communicate and coordinate with crew and managers.

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Works outdoors and able to be exposed to all weather conditions including extreme hot and cold temperatures
  • Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, lifts, bends, and moves objects up to 50 pounds on uneven terrain
  • Exposed to loud noise.
  • Exposed to live track/trains and high voltage.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain concentration and mental alertness in a variety of situations
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
