Position Summary  

 

Working safely in a team environment the Track Supervisor will comply with all regulatory and company safety and operational policies and procedures and is responsible for managing and directing a crew of workers to deliver a successful project by meeting or exceeding safety goals, quality standard, production rates, schedule and customer satisfaction. The Foreman has a proven track record in rail construction, maintenance & planning, having worked on tie changes, constructing new track, maintaining or repairing track, cutting and drilling rail, gauging rail, constructing turnouts, distressing rail, rail changes, and other related activities. In addition, he/she will have directed multiple crews of workers, a proven track record of delivering successful projects by meeting or exceeding safety goals, quality standards, production rates, schedule, and continuously achieving results in extreme customer satisfaction. 

 

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Review project contracts & documents and plan work to ensure that the project is constructed in accordance with the contract documents. 

  • Pre-plan work activities with the Superintendent to develop the best means & methods, including safety action plans. 

  • Plan and execute day to day operations on assigned projects & ensure that proper resources are in place for the timely completion of work – labour, equipment, & material. 

  • Responsible for crew performance as related to company goals, safety audits, administration of company policies & procedures. Conduct tailgate meetings. Initiate follow up actions as necessary including training, orientation, discipline, etc. 

  • Conduct daily briefing with crew to review production goals, performance feedback, safety & schedule, hazards and to solicit feedback from workers. 

  • Perform a variety of related administrative task such as production reports, time collection, equipment logs, inspection reports, extra work records, reviews cost reports with team members, & other related project based responsibilities. 

 

Required Skills and Qualifications  

 

  • Completion of grade twelve (12) or equivalent. 

  • Five (5) to ten (10) years construction experience on railway and/or maintenance environments including experience with tie changes; constructing, maintaining or repairing track; cutting, drilling or gauging rail; constructing turnouts, distressing rail; rail changes; and other related activities.  

  • Must have a valid Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR) and Track Inspection 

  • Guideline (TIG) certifications - will provide training if certifications have expired. 

  • Supervisory experience directing and organizing work for multiple crews of workers. 

  • Proven track record of having delivered successful projects. 

  • Must have a valid class five (5) driver’s license or appropriate license as required for the unit. 

  • Understand the purpose & use of all rail equipment & a sound knowledge of the use of all rail specific hand power tools. 

  • Must be computer literate & have the ability to do time & equipment entry. 

  • Must be physically fit, in good condition and have excellent vision, hearing and eye/hand coordination to perform the duties of the job. 

  • Ability to understand and follow safety rules, policies, procedures and regulations. 

  • Ability to read construction drawings and specifications. 

  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work as a team to jointly carry out assigned tasks. 

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions 

 

  • Occasionally works outdoors at construction sites and may be exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather. 

  • Works indoors in an office environment  

  • Exposed to loud noise. 

  • Significant travel away from home is required, rotating shifts, overtime, weekends and some night work. 

  • May be exposed to live track/trains and high voltage. 

  • Must wear appropriate safety equipment, such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection, as required by the company.
