Position Summary
Reporting to the Signalman or Foreman, the Signal Construction Assistant assists the Signalman in performing all necessary installations, inspections, tests, and maintenance as required.
Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Assist in groundwork installations, wiring & testing .
- Maintain tools and equipment in ready-for-service condition.
- Perform all periodic inspection and tests as per railway standards.
- Signals equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
- Reads and interprets plans, instructions, and specifications to determine work activities.
- Digs ditches or trenches, backfills excavations, and compacts and levels earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes.
- Loads, unloads, and identifies building materials, machinery, and tools, and distributes them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications.
- Comply with railway safe work practices and signal work procedures
- Perform all administrative duties related to proper documentation as per Quality Management System.
- Follows company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED
- Valid driver’s license
- Minimum of year of relevant construction experience.
- Electric knowledge preferred.
- Three (3) years of recent related experience. Railway or construction experience would be an asset.
- Ability to work as a team, to jointly carry out assigned tasks.
- Experience with machines and tools used in construction, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
- Ability to read and understand instructions and work specifications.
- Ability to understand and follow safety rules, policies, procedures, and regulations.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Works outdoors at construction sites for 10 to 12 hours a day.
- Exposure to live track/trains and high voltage
- Travel to work sites is required.
- Travel and overnight stays in company paid hotel rooms.
- Performs physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as standing, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending, and handling of materials, equipment, and tools.
- Lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries heavy objects, machinery, and tools up to 50 pounds.
- Exposed to load noise, train and vehicular traffic.
- Work is safety sensitive and protective equipment is required.
