Position Summary
Reporting to the Track Supervisor, the F&S Welder is to complete day-to-day tasks by meeting or exceeding corporate and project goals for safety, quality, profitability and schedule, resulting in extreme customer satisfaction. F&S Welders weld and repair railroad track assets in a heavy construction, live rail environment through the stick and wire-feed welding and grinding processes.

$39.32/ hour + to start.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Embrace and promote our safety culture while adhering to industry and company policies and procedures
- Perform as the on-site Supervisor for the working crew responsible to complete the task assigned.
- Examines job specifications, prepares equipment and materials, executes repairs in a timely manner.
- Performs railway related track repairs to various types of assets including special track work, frogs, stock rails, switch points, guardrails, derails, etc. utilizing various grinding and welding methods specific to the railroad welding manual.
- Repairs and replaces defective equipment parts as required.
- Cuts materials using air arcs, burning rods and cutting torch to fit fabrication and job requirements.
- Examines work pieces for defects and measures work pieces to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Performs both routine preventive maintenance as emergency repairs
- Detects faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notifies supervisors.
- Operates equipment per safety policies, rules and regulations.
- Become and remain CROR qualified and able to obtain track protection as required to perform day to day activities in accordance to company and customer standards.
- Review the work site on a minimum daily basis and consults with Supervisor and or
contractor’s representative to understand work being conducted, and any potential
hazards to effectively communicate and document through task specific Job Briefings. - Takes responsibility for crew performance as it relates to company goals, safety audits, and following company policies and procedures. Initiates follow up action as necessary including training, orientation, mentoring, discipline, etc.
- Conduct task specific Job Briefings daily with crew to review track protection, production goals, performance feedback, safety and schedule, hazards, and to solicit feedback from the workers as required by PNR and/or Customer policy and procedure.
- Responsibly operates company vehicles and ensures all daily maintenance and
inspections of the units are completed. - Always maintains a dedication to safety by modeling, providing education and enforcing safe work practices and company policies and procedures.
- Able to appreciate time sensitive duties, plan and execute accurately to achieve daily goals and production in a safe manner according to industry standards
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
General/Other Responsibilities and Duties:
- Trains, mentors, and motivates workers.
- Inspects equipment, diagnoses problems and notifies Supervisor of the need to the repair equipment.
- Keeps records and prepares reports of maintenance work during daily tasks including daily work orders and time entries as required.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- A minimum of 3 years of welding experience in a heavy industrial environment is considered an asset.
- Thorough knowledge of welding material and welding properties of various types of metals.
- Experience with MIG and stick welding
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to interpret assembly drawings and detailed welding prints.
- Ability to look at a problem and recommend the best and most cost effective means for repair.
- Ability to understand and follow safety policies, rules and regulations.
- Ability to identify various types of special track work to ensure repairs are done in accordance to specifications.
- Familiarity with conformal frog repairs considered an asset.
- Must have a valid Ontario class G driver’s license. Additional Class DZ an asset
- Must have superior welding and grinding skills. Must also be able to recognize welder faults and correct them through mentorship and training.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Works outdoors along the Railway right-of-way.
- Frequently works in the flat welding position in a live rail environment.
- Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, lifts, bends, and moves objects up to 50 pounds.
- Exposed to all weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather.
- Exposed to loud noise.
- Exposed to live track/trains and high voltage.
- Ability to work rotating shifts.
- Able to be shift flexible and available in an emergency to support the railways needs as required.
