The Engineering Manager manages, guides, and trains the engineering staff in the engineering and design of NARSTCO projects. Insures proper design techniques using current engineering principles and practices. Reviews all turnout data sheets and properly identifies the customer’s requirements by communicating with the customer, consulting engineers, track material supplier and the track contractor.  Communicates with NARSTCO Sales personnel to finalize design details for turnout orders and confirm that track material will meet with final customer requirements.  Review and approve all NARSTCO purchase orders for special track material supplied to customers.  Coordinate field visits of NARSTCO contracted Field Engineers to assist with steel tie track and turnout construction and instruct the field crews in the proper construction procedures.  Prepare initial field issue reports and review possible corrective actions.  Provide basic installation and inspection training for new Sales Managers and contracted Field Engineers.

 

Essential Functions

  • Train technical staff on engineering principles and product design
  • Track and document Company Intellectual property
  • Develop new product types and fastening systems from conceptual stage to end product
  • Test/Manage the testing of product and fastening systems
  • Research and develop new improvements to NARSTCO products
  • Coordinate and provide information to Operations in a timely manner to meet customer expectations and operational goals
  • Review and set tolerances
  • Consider/Implement safety policies and procedures in all elements of design and engineering
  • Develop/create controls to insure the quality and consistency of the end product
  • Develop/create controls to reduce in-process scrap and rework
  • Coordinate the replacement/correction of product with quality issues in the field
  • Enforce policies and procedures
  • Administer corrective actions for engineering staff
  • Review all turnout data sheets for new orders and properly identify customer requirements, communicating with customer, consulting Engineers, track material supplier and/or railroad contractor;
  • Communicate with NARSTCO Sales Personnel and customers to finalize design details for turnout orders.  Confirm that track material will meet final customer requirements;
  • Coordinate field visits of NARSTCO contracted Field Engineers (“Track Engineer”) to assist with steel tie track and turnout construction and instruct railroad/contractor crew in the proper construction procedures;
  • Visit customer facilities or review drawings and photographs to identify options for replacing existing wood turnouts with new steel tie turnouts;
  • Assist Sales Managers as they aid customers in identifying material replacement options;
  • Participate in field visits as required for new construction and to review problem areas, prepare reports on conditions found and recommend corrective actions;
  • Review customer project layout drawings and custom design requirements with customers, consulting engineers and contractors;
  • Review customer project layout drawings and custom design requirements with customers, consulting engineers and contractors.  Perform project layout drawings by adding steel ties and turnout sets to customer drawings while identifying any custom design requirements, where applicable.  Provide completed project layout drawings and support to NARSTCO engineering staff for the completion of design projects and production activities;
  • Prepare initial field issue reports as required. Coordinate field issue reports prepared by field engineers and review possible corrective action with NARSTCO Engineering;
  • Review and approve all NARSTCO purchase orders for special track material supplied to customers;
  • Provide basic installation and inspection training for new Sales Managers and Field Engineers;
  • Prepare periodic updates to the NARSTCO installation manual;
  • As needed, meet with customers and engineering firms
  • Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations;
  • Maintain departmental housekeeping standards;

Supervisory Responsibility

Project Engineers, Project Engineering Technicians, and Field Engineers

 

Work Environment

The job operates primarily in an office environment with exposure to dangerous machinery when visiting customer sites or potential hazmat environments and work that will require exposure to dangerous machinery, hazardous chemicals, loud noises, machines, fumes, heat/cold, sparks, metal dust and industrial moving parts when visiting the plant facility.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

The employee is required to stand, walk, sit, drive, listen, talk, bend, kneel, reach, push/pull and periodically lift up to 50 pounds.   Assistance is required for anything over 50 pounds.

 

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position.  Hours of work are based on a schedule up to 8 hours per day, 40 hours a week, and overtime depending on company internal and external project demands.

Required Education and Experience

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and experience within Railroad industry and working within Track and/or Engineering departments.
  • Two to three years drafting and design layout on a 3D CAD system (preferably Microstation or Solidworks)
  • Knowledge and experience with Mechanical Design/Technology/Engineering, Mechanical Drafting/Computer Aided Design, machine controls, pneumatics, hydraulics, power transmission, safety controls and general machine shop
  • Management background with track record of driving continuous improvement and optimization for all processes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team
  • Intermediate experience in MS Office, Project Management, tool design and procurement.
  • Ability to  read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Experience in industrial, production manufacturing and fabrication preferred
