Pay Range: $26 to $28 /hr

 

Position Summary

Responsible for the safe operation of industrial trucks in the transport and delivery of construction materials to railroad construction jobsites. Performs a variety of tasks involving physical labor at construction sites, utilizing hand and power tools and other equipment.

 

  • Drive 20% and work 80% is in the field as a laborer/operator.
  • Drive crew to and from job site.
  • Drive a 750 crew truck with air brakes.
  • Hauling heavy equipment and rail construction material.


 

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Cleans and prepares construction sites to eliminate possible hazards 
  • Measures, marks, and records openings and distances to lay out areas where construction work will be performed 
  • Controls traffic passing near, in, and around work zones. 
  • Removes and replaces track and track components (e. g. ties, rails, bars, etc.) 
  • Cuts rails to specific lengths 
  • Drills holes through rails for insertion of bolts, and tightens or loosens bolts at joints that hold ends or rails together 
  • Raises rails to allow for tie removal and replacement 
  • Removes and replaces ballast 
  • Slides and aligns tie plates 
  • Corrects deviations in track surface, alignment, and gauge 
  • Observes condition of tracks, track beds, and track right of way to detect and report problems or defects 
  • Digs holes and trenches. 
  • Sorts track material for loading and unloading and assists operators with signaling equipment.  
  • Complies with all company and railroad safety rules, practices and regulations. 
  • Operates commercial trucks on public roadways in accordance with prevailing traffic laws and regulations, and according to company safety policies.
  • Operates trucks in the loading and off-loading of materials.
  • Inventories and inspects goods to be moved to confirm quantities and conditions. Secures cargo for transport.
  • Maneuvers trucks into loading or unloading positions, checking that vehicle and loading equipment tare properly positioned.
  • Hauls backhoes, rollers and other small equipment as well as rail equipment and material.
  • Following experience would be a plus; Truck/trailer, lowboys, drop-neck and flat-bed stretch trailers.
  • Preferred experience: Roll-back, tilt- deck and dump-truck

 

 

General/Other Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assists with lifting/moving, loading/unloading transported materials as needed
  • Documents vehicle deficiencies and provides notice to maintenance department.
  • Operates equipment, such as truck cab computers, CB radios, and telephones, to exchange necessary information with bases, supervisors, or other drivers

 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience operating commercial motor vehicles in a railroad construction or related environment.
  • A minimum of 1 year of construction-related experience.
  • A valid Commercial Driver’s License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Driving Record
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to safety requirements and procedures
  • Must be able to travel locally, some overnight.

 

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Uses hands to handle and control materials, tools and vehicle controls.
  • Uses repetitive motions Uses close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • Frequently performs physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as standing, lifting, walking, stooping, bending, reaching and handling of materials, equipment and tools
  • Uses hands and fingers to operate equipment and tools involved in repairs
  • Lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries heavy objects, machinery, and tools up to 50 pounds
  • May be exposed to live track/trains and high voltage.
  • Must wear appropriate safety equipment, such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection, as required by the company.
  • May be exposed to harsh weather conditions
  • May be exposed to loud noise.
