Position Summary


RailWorks is seeking a Project Controls Engineer to join our team in Chicago to oversee railroad construction projects in the U.S. This person will work with project teams to implement company standard project controls processes and procedures.  This may include training project team members on understanding principles of project controls as well as use of tools.  50 - 65% travel is required to project sites.


Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Review projects to evaluate cost and schedule status.  
  • Evaluate project change order status for prime contract. 
  • Evaluate project subcontract management process.
  • Evaluate project based document control process.
  • Evaluate physical progress monitoring.  May require assisting project with process.
  • Assist in initial project set up, short term planning and overall project scheduling duties.
  • Assist with troubleshooting of projects.


Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years in heavy civil construction, preferably in the rail transportation industry.
  • Proficient with Primavera P6.
  • A bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering or related.
  • Willing to travel 50% to 65%.
  • Thorough knowledge of project management practices which includes understanding contracts, planning & scheduling, cost control, earned value and change management.
  • Working knowledge of accounting systems, experience with JD Edwards a plus.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Willingness to travel in the U.S. and Canada
  • Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines

  • Frequently speaks, reads, writes and uses a computer keyboard
  • May require occasional standing, walking, lifting, stooping, or bending
